Here is Zipper Encyclopedia, full of knowledge about zippers.

Have you heard someone saying “XYZ” to you? It would be embarrassing if you don’t know what it means, because it stands for ‘eXamine Your Zipper’, i.e., your zipper is left wide open, or zip it up.

Zippers are so common and closely related to our daily lives, and sometimes we forget all the convenience they bring to us. Without zippers, we may have ended up using buttons for wearing a jumper or tying a bag with a strap. The story of zippers starts with a man who had a trouble in tying the shoestrings in his military boots.

Mr. Whitcomb L. Judson, an American engineer, usually put on his boots that he picked up as a substitute for shoes. However, as you can imagine, the boots with so many strings did not help this chubby guy to be ready for the work. He was almost always late for work owing to his boots, and one day, his boss got really angry for his tardiness and scolded him severely. Raged, Judson decided to quit his job on that day, and instead he started to work on a way to quickly fasten his boots and came up with an idea of zipper.

On Aug 29, 1893, he patented his latest invention (hook-and-eye sliding fastener called ‘C-curity’), which later had its public debut at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair but with little commercial success. It was Gideon Sundback from Universal Fastener Company who made significant improvements on Judson’s fastener and in 1913 designed a device bearing a strong resemblance to the modern zipper. Universal Fastener Company was founded by Judson and later evolved into Talon Inc. In 1923, B.F. Goodrich Company, famous rubber and tire company, used Sundback’s design on their new rubber boots and coined the name ‘zipper’. In the beginning, zippers were primarily used for boots and tobacco pouches. It took almost another twenty years for zippers to catch on in the fashion industry and achieve wide acceptance as the novel fastening solution for garments.

In Korea, Deajin Zipper founded by Kwangkook Cho first started zipper production line around the end of the Korean War (1953). At that time, zippers were machined using press tools and only 15 cm long. In the following year (1954), Korea Zipper in Busan and Hanil Zipper and Daehaw Zipper in Seoul started their businesses and imported zipper manufacturing apparatus for mass production from West Germany and U.S.A., respectively. In order to overcome the limited capacity of press technology, Korean zipper manufacturers introduced die casting in 1964 and since then die casting becomes the standard technology and produces thousands miles of zippers per day.

  • ZIPPER TYPES

Here is Zipper Encyclopedia, full of knowledge about zippers.

    Classification by Material

    Metal Zipper

    (Metal - Fastener : MF)

Metal Zippers are typically the first kind to be developed among various zippers. They are classified into three groups based on the types of the metal used for the teeth and further subdivided by post-treatment.

    Plastic Zipper

    (Plastic - Fastener : PF)

Raw materials consisting of the acetyl resin mixed with colored pigments are fused directly onto the tape using the injection molding technique. Plastic zippers come in various colors, and the molded plastic chain has the most popular teeth design.

    Polyester Zipper

    (Coil - Fastener : CF)

Polyester Zippers are also known as Nylon Zippers or Coil Zippers. The teeth of these zippers are extruded polyester monofilaments, sewn on the zipper tape. The name coil zipper was derived from the spiral shape of the teeth. Popular in Europe, they are very flexible and find many applications including garments, bags and tents.

    Classification by Use

    Closed - end Zipper
Closed - end Type Two Slider Zipper
    Open-end Zipper
    Two-way Zipper

    Determining the Dimension of Zipper

Closed - end Zipper Distance between the bottom stop and the top end of the slider when fully zipped up
(If the top stop is above the end of the slider, use the top stop for measurement.)
Open - end Zipper Distance between the bottom end of the tape and the top end of the slider when fully zipped up
(If the top stop is above the end of the slider, use the top stop for measurement.)
Two - way Zipper Distance between the bottom end of the tape and the top end of the upper slider
(If the top stop is above the end of the slider, use the top stop for measurement.)

    Slider Position

    L/S

    Left-side slider

In Left-side Slider (Right Insert), a slider is installed on the left-side chain from the wearer’s perspective, and (s)he puts the right-side Insert Pin into the left-side Retaining Box for use.

    R/S

    Right-side slider
